T ome, 2021
First place in the Criticism Award in the specialty of Printmaking, Faculty of Art and Design, Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP).
During the pandemic period cases of gender-based violence increased exponentially in Peru. This unfortunate news reach us daily through the media. But, is the way in which the news are presented appropriate? Is there a real intention from the media to generate change and reflection on this issue?
This 1 year theoretical-artistic research explores the ideologies that construct the common sense of society through drawing, reappropriation, digital media and archive from the most popular newspaper in Peru, el Trome, from a gender perspective to reveal patriarchal discourse instilled and reproduced in its pages.
The project is made up of the following artworks:
Violent Covers: a series of 14 printed drawings from el Trome’s archive from 2018 to 2021
T ome zine: 16 pages zine printed on newspaper. This zine brings together drawings that question the role of the media, highlighting ideologies constrained by market demands such as capitalist patriarchy (Federicci), and invites El Trome’s readers to question their role in addressing this social issue.
December 3rd, 2021: A series of photos that capture how T ome zine were handed out by the owner of the kiosk (Mrs. Patty) in my neighborhood of Salamanca, Ate in Lima. T ome was integrated into the daily lives of the neighbors, inviting them to reflect on the images generated in this research.
